Naming the Mid-Twenties Crisis
The world is well-aware of the mid-life crisis that most people go through when they are in their late 40’s early 50s, but what is the crisis called post-college and pre-30’s, because this shit is hard. We are between friends getting married in the springtime and friends getting blacked out drunk at Taco Tuesday. Some of us are in high executive positions, while others are still living at home with our parents. We hop on planes and vacation every other month, but our checking accounts are in overdraft. We all have structure, but then again it seems as if we are always rebuilding that structure to fit whatever mold or meltdown we are having during that time.
My current meltdown is this: I just totaled my car, moved into a new apartment that I cannot afford, started a job that is 45 mins away from my house, applying to new positions to afford my lifestyle, and I have a daily urge to go to Saks Fifth Avenue and buy a new pair of shoes to put in my overly-expensive walk in closet. I’m single, but in love with 3-4 people (who’s counting). Probably emotionally taken advantage of more than not, and I’ll be off my parents health and car insurance in the next 6 months. Again, can someone tell me what this crisis is called because I’m in the midst of the storm.
So, how do we navigate? Giving up is not an option because quitters never make it to the finish line. However, can we collectively support the contestants that are exhausted running the race?It doesn’t help that we are all trying to keep up with a “brand” showcased on social media or make our parents “proud” by being independent, self-sufficient, contributors to society—it kinda sucks.
Your 20’s are suppose to be the time to have the most fun, build for your future, find the love of your life, start a family, not age, keep traveling, and somehow stay mentally stable enough to go to work every day and have a blossoming social life? The pressure to perform is probably as intense as Sha’Carri Richardson’s second Olympic race where she came in 9th place. But we have to remember that even though we might not win the race (yet) we are still on the track and we still matter, even if we don’t have all the pieces to the puzzle figured out.
So, what do we call this mid-twenties crisis era?
